The AI Marathon Virtual School, a multilingual platform providing 235 content items. Differentiated interfaces allowed for personalized competency development, serving as a permanent digital infrastructure that continues to support schools after the conclusion of the marathon.
AI Month
In a single month, Israel mobilized half its students and over 100,000 teachers around a shared AI literacy baseline. AI Month was a coordinated national sprint, built on a research-grounded competency framework, that shifted the entire system's culture toward AI adoption faster than any multi-year pilot could.
The Challenge
Israel’s education system is vast and diverse, serving millions of students across multiple language communities. By late 2024, AI literacy became a foundational necessity for both students and educators. However, traditional curriculum adoption cycles could not keep pace with global AI developments. The Ministry faced a critical challenge: how to build system-wide AI awareness and competency within months, recognizing that rapid skill development is a national strategic priority that cannot wait for multi-year pilot phases.
The Solution
To promote a faster, more unified operation, the Ministry launched AI Month, not as a standalone event, but as a high-impact "Strategic Sprint" designed to accelerate a multi-year national transformation. The strategy shifted from gradual, isolated pilots to a system-wide mobilization that established a unified literacy baseline.
The core of this solution was the four core competencies, a research-grounded pedagogical framework. This framework provided the "North Star" for the entire system, ensuring that the intensive month-long activities weren't just excitement, but a structured entry point into a long-term learning path.
The Framework
The initiative was the peak of a coordinated effort, preceded by over three-month intensive preparation phase involving stakeholders across all levels of the education system. It was implemented through five interconnected channels:
-
Digital Learning:
-
Student Competitions:
Through the AI Forces and StartCupAI competitions, over 12,000 student projects were submitted.
-
National Broadcast Events:
Strategic live broadcasts established shared reference points across the entire system, reaching over 680,000 viewers and creating a sense of national momentum and a shared mission.
-
Industry and Defense Sector Mentoring:
A massive volunteer effort involving 3,500 mentors from over 400 companies. This channel bridged the gap between classroom learning and professional innovation, establishing a model for ongoing industry-school partnerships.
-
Staff Professional Development:
Building on years of prior investment in digital literacy, the program empowered 110,000 educators through a challenge-based training model. This ensured that the staff didn't just "witness" AI Month, but gained the tools to lead its integration into their daily teaching.
What This Framework Makes Possible
Within a single month, AI Month established four things that remain in place:
- From event to infrastructure: the tools, frameworks, and mentoring networks deployed during the month continue to be available to schools throughout the year
- Shared standards: the Four Core Competencies continue to guide curriculum development and provide a consistent language for AI initiatives
- Educator capacity: training over 100,000 teachers in a concentrated period created a critical mass of educators equipped to lead AI integration
-
A model for central-local balance: the Ministry builds infrastructure and frameworks; schools retain the agency to continue their AI work independently
AI Month demonstrated that speed and scale can coexist. It established the foundational literacy and institutional confidence for the sustained integration of AI across public education.
